Strong Laws Protect Wildlife
One of the most significant victories of 2025 came through the defense of wildlife protections across the United States. Animal Advocates have successfully defeated 57 proposed state bills that would have weakened or eliminated critical safeguards for animals.
These proposals included attempts to:
- Open new hunting seasons for black bears, mountain lions, and wolves
- Allow year-round hunting of mountain lions
- Delist gray wolves at the state level
- Expand or legalize hounding, a cruel practice that uses packs of dogs to hunt wildlife
- Enshrine controversial practices such as trapping, baiting, and hounding into state constitutions
Stopping these measures protected countless animals and prevented harmful practices from becoming permanently embedded in law — a major win for ethical, science-based wildlife management.
A Big Win for the Ocean
2025 marked a monumental year for ocean conservation. Countries including Australia, Argentina, Portugal, and others established massive new marine protected areas, safeguarding critical habitats for whales, sharks, coral reefs, and countless marine species.
These sanctuaries help restore biodiversity, combat overfishing, and protect ecosystems that regulate our planet’s climate, offering hope for healthier oceans for generations to come.
Global Trade Protections for Vulnerable Species
International cooperation also reached new heights in 2025. Under CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species):
- 45 species of sharks and rays received stronger protections against overexploitation
- African vultures, vital to ecosystem health, gained enhanced safeguards
- Rare iguana species were granted new protections to combat illegal trade
These measures help curb wildlife trafficking and ensure vulnerable species aren’t pushed closer to extinction.
