The core of Peeshi is of course creating awareness of important issues regarding animals and their environment. Well, what is an important component of that? Animal Non–profits. Yes I’m sure there are plenty of animal lovers out there that would love nothing more than to start a business themselves without the need of donations and volunteers, but that just isn’t realistic. Therefore, we as a community rely heavily on non profit organizations to assist with the protection of animals which is insanely important to not just them but us as well. There are plenty of reasons of importance in regards to Animal NPOs, but the 3 I really want to zone in on specifically are the protection of animals, raising awareness/advocating for change and rescuing animals. They do all of this all while promoting compassion and empathy.

There’s a long list of the ways NPOs protect animals and they are all important. From wild animals in Africa to the rehabilitation of local wildlife to ending puppy mills. Unfortunately the need for these organizations logically is correlated to the lack of empathy and compassion humans have had over the years. We’ve created the current issues and it is also up to us to change and fix them and Animal NPOs help tremendously in doing so.
They investigate, take legal action, organize petitions, research, prevent cruel treatment of animals in captivity and in the wild and in some cases, protest. Organizations like PETA (for example) is probably the most known animal rights organization in the world whose main objective is to fight for the ethical treatment of animals. If you’re interested in learning more about Peta and how you can get involved please visit their website at https://www.peta.org/action
In some cases, it is difficult to know when/how you can help advocate for animals but there are simple ways you can help that some may not be aware of.
Animal NPOs can use activism and advocacy to raise awareness, mobilize support and drive change for the welfare of animals. Things like protests and petitions, campaigns, Lobbying (lobby for legislative changes to improve animal laws, ban harmful practices and promote ethical treatment) and participating in community events in which they talk to the public about specific issues that are affecting the ethical treatment of animals.
Based on my prior knowledge on what I already know about the treatment of animals being violated by the human race, some of the main issues that NPOs fight against are animal cruelty (puppy mills, neglect, providing adequate food, water shelter or veterinary care (read more here)), animal experimentation (animals may be starved, shocked, burned and poisoned simply out of a curiosity (read more here) And factory farming (factory farms often use cost-saving measures that can be cruel to animals. This showcases one example of how our greed makes animals suffer when they don’t have to). I am sure I will dive deeper into these topics in a later blog but if you are curious, please visit the links I provided.
Now rescuing animals doesn’t necessarily just mean adopting from shelters, I mean yes of course that is extremely important but rescuing animals can also refer to the rehabilitation of wildlife, rescuing neglected animals from hoarding situations or unkept environments, reuniting pets to their owners, ending puppy mills, TNR programs, and so much more.
There is a wide variety of both local, national and international animal NPOs that target a specific demographic of animals with specific issues. Here are some examples below with links to their website if you are interested in learning more about them and what they do.
Believe it or not, animal welfare is extremely important even if you don’t have an extreme passion for animals (which is crazy for me to even comprehend). Specifically, because we co exist with animals and their environments meaning, if there are issues with them, it will affect us in one way or another. For example, possums eat roughly 5,000 larval ticks a year (96.5%) acting like an “ecological trap” (source here) Because of this, their survival is important in reducing bites in which they can transport potentially life threatening diseases like lyme disease. Another example would be the overpopulation of cats and dogs which can directly impact local communities and quickly become a nuisance. The list goes on and on. Please consider educating yourself and others and do what you can do in order to improve the welfare of animals, their environments and our own environments. They matter.
